Breast muscle myopathies in broiler: mechanism, status and their impact on meat quality – A review

Abstract Almost a decade ago, the sudden rise of breast muscle defects in fast-growing commercial broiler breeds challenged production industry and meat scientists to address issue these novel abnormalities. After that, widespread hypothesis showing correlation between high yield incidence myopathies received much acceptance from research community. Increased hypertrophy unbalanced growth connective tissues lead an inadequate blood supply that ultimately causes hypoxia fibers. Reduced vascular density fibers induces oxidative stress mitochondrial dysfunction, leading fibrosis, lipidosis myodegeneration. Along with physical changes, myopathic muscles exhibit poor sensory properties, abnormal texture properties low nutritional profile. As alter meat’s appearance, they have negative impact on customer’s behavior preference. A better environment proper dietary supplementation balanced breeding strategies can minimize chicken. This review aims underlying mechanism behind their poultry quality, including value consumer behavior. It describes link genetic non-genetic elements influencing myopathies, along occurrence myopathies.
